We have designed a wide range of courses to help support the volunteer workforce in sports – including officials, coaches, mentors and tutors. Below you will find more information about each course – for the face to face courses please get in contact with us to arrange dates that suit you. There is also a list of continued professional development (CPD) modules which you will find on our e-learning platform. More courses are added to this list throughout the year.

Introduction to Tutor Training (2 day)

The focus of this course is around teaching you how to teach as such – learning styles and understanding how to mould your content to fit the individual student to ensure they retain the maximum amount of information.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Able to demonstrate presentation and interpersonal skills
  • To create and maintain a learning environment
  • Deliver competence based sessions and draw out key learning points
  • Facilitate learning through practical and micro teaching sessions
  • Demonstrate questioning, listening, reviewing and action planning skills
  • Demonstrate self-reflective skills and action play for personal development
  • Use assessment to facilitate individual learning
  • Demonstrate sound technical knowledge and Risk Management awareness

Introduction to Assessing (1 day)

This course will teach you how to enhance your assessing skills including evaluating a performance and offering quality constructive feedback. The assessment for this course is through specific practical tasks.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand the role of an assessor
  • Have a clear understanding of how people process information
  • To have a clear understanding of appropriate record keeping
  • Understand the importance of giving and receiving feedback in an appropriate way
  • Able to identify key areas of strengths and developments
  • Understanding of a competency base marketing scheme
  • Through the observation of a live match, event or video, produce a quality specimen report
  • Conduct a positive post-match / event de-brief

Introduction to Coaching (1 Day)

This course teaches you how to create your role as a coach and develop your own coaching style – this will be inline with developing a clear understanding of how you are perceived as a coach.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how people learn
  • Playing to your strengths as a coach
  • The importance of engaging effectively on a sustainable basis
  • Define and review individuals ‘overall’ personal brand as an effective and respected coach; and understanding the impact this has on the sports officials they are developing
  • How to be flexible in your communication style to meet the needs of each individual sports official
  • Understand how you can drive improvement through effective communication and structured coaching conversations
  • Maximise the value both parties get from coaching conversations

Elite Assessors (2 days)

The emphasis of this course is to enhance your assessing skills which will help you critically evaluate an official’s performance.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how to evaluate the referees overall performance
  • Identifying proactive and preventative measures
  • Giving advice on how match officials can improve their performance, ensuring a consistent approach
  • Identifying talented individuals
  • Identify Key Match Incidents (KMI’s) in a match and evaluate the judgement of the officials
  • Establish consistent evaluation of performance through a normalised marketing scheme
  • Through the observation of a live match or video, produce a specimen report

Introduction to Mentoring (1 day)

You will be shown how to keep the learner the centre of your delivery in all aspects through various methods including adapting the teaching style to suit the learners abilities and how to support your official to realise their full potential.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand the role of a mentor
  • To understand the process and principles of effective mentoring
  • To demonstrate an appreciation of requisite interpersonal skills
  • To explore strategies for working with the sports official
  • Demonstrate the ability to use core skills (observation, giving accurate feedback, active listening, questioning, critical reflection etc) when mentoring

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector – PTLLS (5 Days)

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to teach in the Further Education (FE) sector. These qualifications can be taken as stand alone qualifications but it can also be achieved as part of the Certificate / Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and demonstrate roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
  • Understand inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning
  • Facilitate learning and development for individuals
  • Facilitate learning and development for groups
  • Demonstrate ability to design and deliver micro teach sessions
  • Understand the principles of assessment in lifelong learning
  • Understand the principles and practices of assessment

Learning & Development (5 days)

The candidate will learn skills that will enhance learning and information retention in all aspects of their lives. This course is aimed at those candidates who are involved with coaching, mentoring and assessing.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding the principles and practices of learning and development
  • Reflect on and improve own practice in learning and development
  • Facilitate learning and development for individuals
  • Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
  • Engage learners in the learning and development process
  • Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

These courses are for officials of any level and for any sport. The key points can be transferred into your sport. You will be asked to think about your own examples and experiences which will help you retain the information. These courses are online (face to face courses can be arranged for your organisation – for more information please contact us) and will take between 1 and 3 hours. You are able to dip in and out as you wish as your progress will be saved. These courses are available for a small annual price of £20. Academies

We can arrange academies for your organisation which usually take the following formats:

  • Play on Ref – a course designed to teach children aged 7 and up the basic laws of football in a fun and safe environment. This has been developed for anyone to teach – teachers, dinner ladies, scout leaders etc. This has proved popular with football teams and has been run through various Premier League teams. This course is also available as a franchise – full training will be given and resources are available.
  • Camps 3-7 days long – we can create a bespoke programme to cover what your candidates need.
  • Set up academies to help alongside FE and HE courses to put theoretical learning into practice for your groups of candidates.
  • Officials development programme – (Sport Specific or Generic) this is available for any official to encourage learning a wider range of skills and experience.
  • International Academies – generally linked to NGB’s or Education Establishments.
